Sure, summer is a time to clear one's head and relax. But going too long without literary fiction can cause intellectual blunting and dictionary dust. So here are a few books to ease you and your patrons back in to the heavier stuff:

  • Playing House- Fredrica Wagman; Foreword by Philip Roth (Zoland Books): Hailed by Publishers Weekly as "A probing descent into madness that will fascinate the same audience that appreciated I Never Promised You a Rose Garden,” this book, about a woman’s struggle with the lasting effects of a childhood sexual relationship with her brother, remains a literary work of enduring value.
  • A Blessed Child- Linn Ullman (Knopf): A bold and bleakly beautiful novel, unsettling in its honesty about the nature of children; a story of three grown half-sisters drawn together to visit their dying father and thereby compelled to relive the shared childhood summers that have left an indelible mark on each.
  • Les Miserables- Victor Hugo (Modern Library): Thirty years having gone by since a major translator took on Victor Hugo's masterpiece, the renowned Julie Rose emerges with a brilliant, energetic rendition of a timeless classic.
  • Playing with the Grown-Ups - Sophie Dahl (Nan A. Talese): For Kitty, growing up at Hay House among doting relations is heaven. But for her Bohemian mother, this domesticity cannot provide the novelty and excitement she craves. When Swami-ji, her mother's guru, sees their future in New York, they relocate, and Kitty is left exiled in a colorless boarding school. Sophie Dahl is the granddaughter of the legendary Roald Dahl.

Health & Wellness: Stay healthy this summer and fall—and for the rest of your life—with these books on healthy living from Random House, Inc.
