December 25 and 26 were the two biggest eBook sales days ever for Random House, Inc., the largest U.S. English-language trade book publisher. Combined eBook sales across e-retailers on December 25th and 26th rose more than 300% over last year’s sales for the same two-day period, which had been Random House’s best two-day eBook sales period ever.

Random House Children’s Books and Smashing Ideas release first book-based children’s app for iPad.
Random House Children’s Books (www.randomhouse.com/kids), together with leading digital media agency Smashing Ideas, today announced that Wild About Books for iPad will be available in the iTunes store on December 16th. Based on the New York Times bestselling children’s picture book, Wild About Books, by Judy Sierra and illustrated by Marc Brown, the app retails for $7.99, but is available now for a special introductory price of $4.99. This is the first product in the partnership between Random House, Inc. and Smashing Ideas, with more interactive digital books based on key properties such as pat the bunny, Little Golden Books®, and others scheduled to follow in the coming months.

With sadness and enormous appreciation, we soon will have to say farewell to a friend and colleague who has made an invaluable contribution to the Random House Publishing Group’s success and its heritage: after more than three decades with us, at the end of November, Carol Schneider, Vice President, Executive Director, Publicity & Public Relations, will retire from Random House.

Random House worldwide acquires multi-language publishing rights to 2012 Salman Rushdie memoir.
In one of the most far-reaching multi-national and multi-language book-publishing deals by one publisher for a single title, Random House has acquired rights to publish a memoir by Salman Rushdie in each of its territories across the world. Markus Dohle, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Random House worldwide, announced the acquisition of hardcover, paperback, audio, and e-book rights for English-, German-, and Spanish-language editions of the work-in-progress from Andrew Wylie, President of The Wylie Agency, the author’s agent. Mr. Rushdie expects to complete his manuscript by the end of the year for publication by Random House in 2012.

Former Newsweek Editor, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham named Random House Publishing Group Executive V.P., Executive Editor.
Jon Meacham, the former editor of Newsweek magazine and the Pulitzer Prize-winning and bestselling author of American Lion, is joining the staff of the Random House Publishing Group as Executive Vice President and Executive Editor. His appointment, effective January 1, 2011, was announced today by Gina Centrello, President and Publisher, Random House Publishing Group, to whom he will report.

Decision Points by George W. Bush publishing November 9 with 1.5 million copy first printing.
Decision Points by George W. Bush will be published in North America on November 9, 2010, by Crown Publishers with a first printing of 1,500,000 copies. The book is a chronicle of the fourteen most critical and historical decisions in the life and public service of the 43rd President of the United States.
Decision Points will be released simultaneaously in the U.S. and Canada as a standard e-book with the complete print edition text and photographs. Crown will simultaneously publish a deluxe e-book edition. This edition will be interactive, allowing readers to click on text to view additional multimedia content, including:
- Videos from the defining moments of the Bush presidency, including President Bush’s inspiring speech to 9/11 rescue workers, intimate Bush family movies, and a special introduction to the edition by the President himself
- Handwritten letters from President Bush’s personal correspondence
- Full texts of President Bush’s most important speeches, including his address to the nation about the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq, and his Second Inaugural
- More than 50 additional photographs not contained in the print edition
Decision Points will also be released as a Random House AudioBook, read by the author.

Debbie Macomber to become Ballantine Bantam Dell author in 2012; Random House Publishing Group acquires world rights to six new novels.
Debbie Macomber, a #1 bestselling author of women’s fiction, with more than 130 million copies of her novels in print worldwide, will join the Random House Publishing Group in 2012, to be published by its Ballantine Bantam Dell division’s Ballantine imprint. Gina Centrello, President and Publisher, Random House Publishing Group, announced the acquisition from the author’s agent, Theresa Park of the Park Literary Group, of worldwide hardcover, paperback, audio, and e-book publication rights for six Macomber novels.

Ruth Reichl, James Beard Award-winning, New York Times bestselling author, and former Editor-in-Chief of Gourmet magazine, is joining the Random House imprint of the Random House Publishing Group as both author and in the newly created position of Editor-at-Large, it was announced today by Random House Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Susan Kamil.

Random House Children’s Books announces the publication of an inspirational new picture book by President Barack Obama.
Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, will publish a children’s illustrated book by President Barack Obama, entitled Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters, it was announced today by Chip Gibson, President and Publisher, Random House Children’s Books. The book will be released with a 500,000-copy first printing in a national laydown on November 16, 2010. It is illustrated by the award-winning and New York Times bestselling artist Loren Long.

Janet Evanovich to join Random House Publishing Group in 2011; Ballantine Bantam Dell acquires world rights to four new novels.
Janet Evanovich, one of the world’s biggest-selling and fastest-growing novelists in print and digital formats, will join the Random House Publishing Group to be published in the U.S. and Canada by Ballantine Bantam Dell. The publisher acquired worldwide hardcover, paperback, audio, and e-book publication rights for four new Evanovich novels from Peter Evanovich, the author’s agent and son. Terms were not disclosed. The announcement was made today by Gina Centrello, President and Publisher of the Random House Publishing Group, who said, “Janet is one of just a handful of prolific novelists who truly is a growth brand unto themselves for booksellers and readers.”
