Data Feed Options
Random House, Inc. provides a variety of data feeds for the B2B partners we work with to create and sell our books.
We have 3 different types of data that are fed out weekly via FTP:
- Bibliographic data in either ONIX or EDI 832x12
- Descriptive data (text excerpts, author bios, etc.) in either the ONIX feed or a separate feed to use in conjunction with the EDI 832x12
- Cover image jpg files
We find that these feeds cover the needs of most of our BtoB customers. Below are some details about each of the feeds and attached are sample files and some documentation for each.
ONIX:
Our ONIX data files use the ONIX code values rather than the descriptive names and
are ONIX v2.0. Our ONIX data feeds do not include eBook data, which are sent via
a separate ONIX feed to those customers who require it. The files are zipped,
though to conform with the BISAC naming conventions, they appear as ".zot". You can either rename the files or associate ".zot" with your unzipping software. Our ONIX feeds include the descriptive data so that you can get both bibliographic and descriptive data in one feed.
EDI 832x12:
This is a standard EDI feed of basic bibliographic data. Details of the formatting are
included in the attached sample files. For more information on EDI, please click here for our EDI page.
Descriptive data feed:
If you use the 832x12 data files, you will probably want the Description files as
well. There is a sample in the sample files and they are formatted as:
ISBN | Title |Author | About the Book | About the Author | Jacket Quotes | Table of Contents
Cover Image jpgs:
Cover images are sent in zipped batches as 700dpi, RGB jpg files named by a 10 digit ISBN with dashes. There are 4 sample files included for you to take a look. The file name will begin with "RH_Cover_Image".
Data feed Details:
All feeds are sent out weekly. For ONIX, the weekly feeds include both a full feed and a delta feed with only the records that changed during the course of the previous week. Once you take a full feed once, you can update it by only taking the deltas. These feeds go out on Sundays. Cover feeds are deltas of all new covers generated during the week and are sent out early on Friday mornings. For all of our feeds, we can either push the data to your FTP server or e-mail you and you can pick it up from our FTP server.
Getting backlist:
If you would like to populate a new catalog, we recommend starting with a full feed of ONIX or EDI832x12 and a full Descriptive feed. We can also send you a set of our entire backlist of 36,000+ jpg files on CD.
